Grassland Biome

A biome is a major region of distinctive plant and animal groups well adapted to the physical environment of its distribution area.

Typically a grassland receives 10-20 inches of ppt. per year and has warm to hot summers and cold winters. Typical vegetation is perennial grasses and forbs. Animals found on the grassland would include bison, pronghorn, prairie dogs, coyotes, and badgers.

I would expect to see most of the animals above during our trip except for the bison. I would expect to see the cuurrent dominant herbovre, the cow, in place of the bison. Since we will be along the river, I would expect to see more trees, such as cottonwoods, than would be normal out on the prairie.

I've seen cows and horses but not the others because we do spend most of our time in the riparian zone. However, we will make it a point to hike up into the upland part of the watershed, more than what we usually do on these trips, so I am hopeful for antelope.
