I always think of the different biomes as different rooms in a house, each one with it individual characteristics. Biomes are defined by their particular biotic and abiotic factors and their interactions with each other. A biome is defined by its temperature, precipitation, plants, animals, and soil characteristics.
In South Dakota we are in a grassland biome, and more specifically the prairie. All three types of prairie, (tall grass, mixed grass, and short grass) are found within the state. Since we'll be in Central South Dakota, it should be a mixed prairie environment.
Last year we saw a coyote, deer, and some hawks. So I am hoping to see more of those. I also want to learn more about the plant vegetation of all types. I'm also very interested to see how the flood waters have affected the riverside.
