Earth Systems Update

Earth Systems has been consolidated with the Grassland Watershed class.  It will meet in Pierre June 27 at 10AM.  Even though the content of the classroom session will be the Grassland Watershed class, you will only be responsible for the assignments on this website.

Housekeeping
Class Dates: June 7-9. We will meet at the SD Discovery Center 805 W Sioux Ave 8 AM-5PM on June 7. We will have a working lunch. We will be in the field June 8-9, returning to Pierre approximately by 3PM.
Cost: $15. You can mail in a check or call in with a debit/credit card.
Credits: 2 credits @ $40/credit.
CEUs are available in lieu of credits.
Class Requirements: Please see the class syllabus.

Payment
The $15 helps cover the costs of food and some incidentals that the funders don't cover.  If you would like to pay before the class, you may send a check to 805 W Sioux Ave or call in with a debit/credit card.

Snowflake: A Water Cycle Story
Snowflake: A Water Cycle Story is an excellent children's book depicting the movement of water through the water cycle.  We will be using this book in class although your own copy is not required.  If you would like a copy for $5, please contact me by Tuesday, May 24.

Accommodations
You will need accommodations for Tuesday night, the night between class and the field session.  You may also need accommodations on Monday night in order to arrive at the SD Discovery Center by 8AM.  Pleae feel free to use the discussion board to call for a roommate.


Field session
You will not need tents, sleeping bags, dry bags, cots or kayaks for the field session unless you prefer to use your own gear. If you want to stay at a local campground Mon/Tues, I may be able to arrange a gear loan for you. Let me know if you need that. You will need a camp chair, your personal clothing, toiletries, snacks (meals are provided) and a digital camera for the field session. There will a more complete list coming soon. You will need a digital camera for the field.

Assignments
The class has three sessions: independent study, classroom, field.  You are encouraged to complete part one of the independent study before the classroom session by posting a reflection about nature journaling in the discussion forum.  There is an optional assignment to become familiar with the Taking It Global website.
